Escape Plan 2: Hades (2018)

Cast:

Sylvester Stallone, Dave Bautista, Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, Jaime King, Jesse Metcalfe, Huang Xiaoming and Tyrone Woodley

Synopsis:

Years after Ray Breslin (Sylvester Stallone) fought his way out of the escape-proof prison called ‘The Tomb’, he’s organised a new top-notch, for-hire security force that
includes some of the best in the business.

But when one of Breslin’s team goes missing – inside a computerised techno-terror battle-maze known as HADES, where human combatants brawl like beasts – Breslin goes back into the secret lock-up to save his friend. To attempt this near impossible mission, he enlists his old friend Trent Derosa (Dave Bautista) and the returning surveillance expert Hush (Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson), to help him return from the gauntlet with both his friend and his life.

Review:

I was very fortunate to recieve a screener for this movie.

Stallone returns as Ray Breslin a security specialist who specialises in getting out of the world’s most fool proof prisons.

When we meet Ray this time around he seems to have taken a back seat and now runs things from the desk at Breslin security. His new team is lead by Shu Ren a skilled martial artist who is set to be Ray’s protégé.

The film focuses more on Shu Ren (Huang Xiaoming) , with Stallone, Bautista and 50 Cent making a cameo, maybe think Chuck Norris’s character in The Expendables 2.

Shu Ren gets captured and imprisoned in a high tech prison known as Hades. The prison is different from any other as it has the ability to change its shape, like a rubix cube. So when Shu Ren thinks he has it figured out it changes and he is back to square one. All the while on the outside Breslin is trying to figure out a way in to rescue Shu Ren.

For Sly fans never fear he gets some good moments, he and Bautista get to take out some goons in a bar, then once Sly gets into Hades he has a couple of fights, nothing big but it’s always great to see Sly in action.

Unlike the first movie this one has loads of fight scenes, from the beginning to the end, especially as in Hades inmates are forced to fight each other daily, sometimes with unfair odds. Some of the CGI is a little dodgy in parts, mainly the explosion at the beginning but for me it’s forgivable. The way the film played out kind of felt like it served as a pilot for a potential series having Sly and Bautista cameo while Huang Xiaoming and Jesse Metcalfe took the lead roles. I wouldn’t object to that idea or even having Huang lead the franchise as he wasn’t boring to watch at all.

Overall I would definitely say check this film out, but don’t go into the movie expecting a Sly-centric film or else you will be disappointed just go in expecting a 90 minute prison action movie and every craving will be satisfied. Also the movie ends on a very open note for the sequel which is titled Escape Plan 3: Devil’s Station.
