Synopsis: A prequel to “Yellowstone,” “1883” follows the Dutton family as they flee poverty in Texas and embark on a journey through the Great Plains to seek a better future in Montana. Real-life couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill star as James and Margaret Dutton, while Sam Elliott portrays Shea Brennan, a tough cowboy who has sadness in his past.

This film tells the origin story of the Dutton family and focuses on James Dutton (Tim McGraw), a Civil War veteran who cannot stop fighting for the betterment of his family. With his deputy Thomas (LaMonica Garrett), a Black cowboy, Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott) is leading the convoy of German immigrants and Dutton’s westward after suffering personal loss.

Dutton is Brennan’s ideal choice to lead a wagon train of new immigrants to Oregon. With Brennan fighting his own demons, additional muscle is required to protect them from the dangers that lie in wait out west. However, Dutton rejects Brennan’s initial proposal as he’s worried enough about his own family to be worrying about somebody else’s. That is until Elsa is accosted in her hotel room by a drunken thug and only saved from a potential rape by her father’s gun-assisted intervention.

bet your life there will be plenty of deception and double-crossing on offer, as well as tension, territorial battles and ten-gallon hats, before the wagon train either reaches its destination – or a far more untimely end.

Isabel May is also impressive, lighting up every scene that she’s in as the Duttons oldest child Elsa. May has such a promising career ahead of her! 

Keep your eyes peeled for Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Hanks as they make cameos.

1883 is the prequel story we didn’t know we needed. terrific acting and a captivating story, accompanied by beautiful cinematography and perfectly choreographed gun battles help keep the audience hooked throughout the 10 episode series.
