The Burning (1981) Review – A Great Slasher

If Friday the 13th kicked open the cabin door for summer camp slashers, The Burning crept in right after with a sharper edge and a much meaner attitude. Directed by Tony Maylam, this 1981 entry stands as one of the most brutal and atmospheric films of the era—despite never quite reaching the same mainstream recognition.

The setup is classic slasher territory: Cropsy, a camp caretaker, is horribly burned in a prank gone wrong. Years later, he returns to the woods—scarred, silent, and armed with a pair of garden shears. The campers have no idea what’s coming.

What separates The Burning from many of its contemporaries is how much time it spends building its characters. These aren’t just disposable bodies waiting for the next kill—they feel like real kids, joking, flirting, and actually enjoying the summer. That added layer makes the inevitable violence hit much harder.

And when it hits—it hits hard.

The effects work by Tom Savini is nothing short of legendary. The infamous raft massacre sequence remains one of the most shocking and relentless moments in slasher history. It’s fast, brutal, and completely unforgiving—a showcase of practical effects at their peak.

Visually, the film leans into its natural setting. The woods feel isolated and oppressive, especially as night falls and Cropsy begins to move through the shadows. The score adds to that unease, giving the film a constant sense of dread just beneath the surface.

Cropsy himself is a different kind of slasher villain. He’s not supernatural, not masked in a gimmicky way—just a burned, vengeful figure driven by pain. That grounded approach makes him feel more real, and in some ways, more disturbing.

Yes, the film follows familiar beats—campfire stories, reckless teens, bad decisions—but it executes them with confidence and a level of craft that elevates it above the pack.

The Burning is a slasher classic that deserves far more recognition. It’s gritty, intense, and anchored by one of the genre’s most unforgettable kill sequences.

Cropsy may not be as iconic as Jason…
but once those shears come out, you won’t forget him.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
