Synopsis: Kurt Russell plays hard-boiled truck driver Jack Burton, who gets caught in a bizarre conflict within, and underneath, San Francisco’s Chinatown. An ancient Chinese prince and Chinatown crime lord has kidnapped a beautiful green-eyed woman, who is the fiancee to Jack’s best friend. Jack must help his friend rescue the girl before the evil Lo Pan uses her to break the ancient curse that keeps him a fleshless and immortal spirit.
Review: Kurt Russell plays our hero Jack Burton. What sets Jack apart from every other action hero is he is pretty useless, he doesn’t have a special set of skills or weapon skills or even very good hand to hand, he is just a loyal friend. Jack gets mixed up in the chaos when his best friend Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) goes to pick up his fiancé from the airport and she gets kidnapped by a street called ‘The Lords Of Death’. Jack and Wang track the gang to a known spot down an alley in Los Angeles’s China Town. From their chaos unfolds as Jack and Wang get caught in the middle of a gang war between the Chang Sings and the Wing Kong , only for it to be halted due to the arrival of The Three Storms, three powerful warriors near God like who are masters with weapons and martial arts, their names are Thunder, Rain and Lightening.
After this we Jack and Wang run into Lo Pan, an ancient sorcerer with incredible power, he is the master of The Storms and the Wing Kong gang.
After an encounter with Lo Pan our duo go back to Wangs uncles restaurant to regroup and think of a plan on how to save Wangs fiancé.
The movie is never dull and Kurt Russell brings Jack to life, it is a role Russell was made for. Teaming with John Carpenter always seemed to bring the best out in Russell. Dennis Dun is on duty to take out hordes of bad guys with some martial arts and even gets a cool sword fight in the finale.
Kim Cattrall is on hand as Jack’s to be love interest and ends up getting herself kidnapped by Lo Pan. This is one movie I would have loved to seen get sequeled, all the characters and the universe its set in are so cool and had endless possibilities. Lucky enough the character has been carried on through comic books.
It’s not everyones cup of tea, if your in the mood for an action, fantasy or if your someone looking for a cult classic Carpenter movie you should invest in this movie, as its one wild ride.
