Exclusive – Vjekoslav Katusin on Order of The Dragon

We’re thrilled to have director Vjekoslav Katusin join us here at Action Reloaded. With a growing reputation in the world of action and martial arts films, Katusin has made waves internationally—delivering hard-hitting stories with explosive talent in front of the lens. His upcoming project, Order of the Dragon, has already generated major buzz, and we’re here to get the inside scoop.

For our readers who might be new to your work, can you tell us a bit about your journey into filmmaking? What inspired you to become a director?

From a very young age, I’ve been captivated by films. I spent almost all my free time watching them during my youth. One memory that stands out is my experience watching “Batman & Robin” with George Clooney and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the theater. I remember leaving the cinema feeling disappointed, which sparked something within me. When I got home, I took a notepad and started writing my own version of a Batman and Robin story at just 14 years old. That was the beginning of my passion for storytelling. I love inventing narratives and bringing them to life, and that early experience really set the foundation for my creative journey.

You’ve worn many hats in the industry—actor, producer, director. How has that helped shape your style and approach to storytelling, especially in the action genre?

I have a deep love for action cinema. I find myself going to the movies multiple times each month, immersing myself in the adrenaline, thrills, and excitement of these films. As filmmakers, we create movies so that audiences can dive into new worlds filled with fascinating characters, stunning visuals, and, of course, plenty of action. It’s that adrenaline rush and the ability to escape reality for a while that draws me and keeps me coming back for more.

Your films often blend international casts and styles. Was that always your vision—to create globally appealing action films?

The one key aim I have as a filmmaker is to captivate the audience. I want viewers to feel entertained and leave the theater thinking, “That was a great film!” The joy of storytelling comes from evoking emotions, whether it’s laughter, excitement, or even tension. If I can achieve that connection with the audience, then I know I’ve fulfilled my purpose.

You’ve worked with a range of talent, from European martial artists to Hollywood veterans. What’s your secret to pulling together such powerful teams?

One aspect of my sets that is quite unique is the emphasis on maintaining a positive working environment. For me, the atmosphere is paramount; it’s about creating a family-like bond among the cast & crew. We work collaboratively—there’s no room for yelling or insults. Everyone is treated equally, whether you’re a grip or the cinematographer. We work together, share meals, and enjoy each other’s company, and I believe that this camaraderie is what leads to exceptional work and creativity on set.

It’s just been announced that you’re teaming up with Mark Stas, Ron Smoorenburg, and martial arts legend Steven Seagal for Order of the Dragon. What attracted you to this project, and how did it come together?

I have always been a huge admirer of Steven Seagal’s filmography. His contributions to cinema, especially films like “Under Siege”, stand out as monumental achievements. The challenge of bringing him on board for our project was significant, but incredibly rewarding. The initial concept for the film actually came from my friend Alexander ‘The White Shark’ Pankine. Together with my screenwriter Miroslav Trcak, we crafted the story and screenplay, aiming to resurrect the essence of the ’80s and ’90s in a manner that does justice to Seagal’s legendary career. Once he agreed to participate, we also brought on Ron Smoorenburg for the lead role and Mark Stas to play the antagonist. Our cast is continually expanding, and I couldn’t be more excited about this project.

Will Order of the Dragon lean more toward martial arts action with gunplay, or the other way around?

“Order of the Dragon” will be an exciting blend of “The Expendables” and “Mortal Kombat”. I don’t want to reveal too much just yet, but I can guarantee that the film will feature scenes unlike anything audiences have witnessed before. Expect plenty of brutal kills that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats!

Fans have been waiting for Steven Seagal to return to the screen. Some even thought he had stepped away for good. What enticed him to join this particular project?

We are thrilled to see him making his comeback through this film. I believe the compelling story we developed was a pivotal factor in his decision to join the project.

From what we know, it seems the film follows Ron Smoorenburg’s character as he tracks down Seagal’s. Will fans get to see Seagal front and center—delivering those iconic Aikido-style fight scenes?

Steven Seagal is a key figure in the film, although he’s not the primary lead. He plays an essential role that holds great significance for the narrative. All of his fans can rest assured—they will not be disappointed.

Seagal’s character name feels like a throwback—almost a nod to Hard To Kill. Was that a deliberate homage for the fans?

No, this is a standalone project, designed without any ties to previous films. There will be a singular moment that opens up a door to something that will excite fans of the ’80s and ’90s, but I’m not going to disclose what that is just yet.

Working with Mark Stas, often dubbed the Belgian Bruce Lee, must’ve been incredible. What was it like having his energy and skills on set?

I had the pleasure of spending several hours discussing Mark’s character, and I must say, he is incredibly talented. I have no doubt that he will not only give his best but also exceed expectations. His presence on this project is truly a blessing, and I can’t wait to see him in action!

Mark Stas is such a fluid, explosive martial artist. With him, Ron, and Seagal in the mix—you’re building a serious dream team of action legends. Can we expect next-level fight choreography?

Absolutely! We are privileged to have Andy Long on board, a long-time member of Jackie Chan’s stunt team. He will be present on set and will play a significant role in the film. Moreover, he will also be involved in the fight choreography, adding immense value to our project.

Let’s get to the big fantasy matchup—Steven Seagal vs. Tong Po. Fans would lose their minds over that. Is there a chance we’ll see that showdown on screen?

Michael Qissi is portraying one of the villains in our film. Yes, he is among several adversaries who will face off against Seagal and Smoorenburg in an epic showdown at the end.

I’m honestly buzzing with excitement for this film. The cast, the concept—it all sounds like a true return to classic action cinema. Any final teases you can share with Action Reloaded readers?

The film is set to be released next year, and I assure you, it will make cinematic history!
