The Bouncer Review – A 90s-Style Action Thrill Ride

Director and writer Massimiliano Cerchi brings this low-budget action thriller to life with the help of John Ozuna’s stylish, slick, and brutal fight sequences, showcasing our hero flexing his chops.

Let’s remember, folks, this is a low-budget movie and doesn’t try to hang with the big boys. It’s a simple, fun, and entertaining action thriller. If you throw back to the ’90s, this feels like a PM Entertainment-style movie, and you can easily picture the likes of Jeff Wincott or Gary Daniels running the miles in this one.

John Ozuna is fairly new to the action genre, but with over 30 years of martial arts experience and two Guinness World Records—Most Punches in One Minute (713) and the Fastest Martial Arts Punch (43.3 mph)—he’s got instant credibility. That shoots him up the ladder, right? Even with all that skill, this was my first time seeing him in action, having missed his previous films. From what I understand, like Robert Kovacs ‘Bronzi,’ Ozuna started out in some of Mr. Rene Perez’s movies.

Opposite Ozuna is Costas Mandylor, who is having an absolute blast playing the lead villain, Kane. He’s a man not to be crossed and owns half the city. Naturally, once the story kicks into gear, Kane and his goons are on Frank’s (Ozuna) back. Cue some chases, double-crosses, and martial arts fights.

The movie follows the standard action B-movie formula—tough, loyal hero steps in against a big villain to rescue the girl, and then the villain wants him dead. Ozuna also choreographs the fight sequences, which are fun and fit the tone of the movie. Personally, I’d love to see him in a Bloodsport-type film. With his speed and ability, that would be something special.

The Bouncer won’t win any awards, but it’s an enjoyable 1 hour and 18 minutes that never gets boring or loses traction. Costas Mandylor dials up his villainy, keeping viewers attentive, and I could swear some of his dialogue was ad-libbed. This introduction to Ozuna has put him on my radar, and I’ll definitely be keeping a close eye on his future projects while checking out his previous ones.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
