Review: Such a classic movie from 2001! Denzel Washington’s Oscar was very well deserved for this movie. This was Denzel and director Antoine Fuqua’s first collaboration together and it was memorable. It was also only the start for this power duo, as they went too do more hit blockbusters together.

Training Day sees Denzel take on the role of Narcotics Detective Alonzo Harris. Alonzo is essentially the villain in a grey sort of way. While we know Alonzo was once a good cop, right now he is corrupt and very power hungry, controlling neighbourhoods and gangs and living by his own set of rules. We are introduced to rookie officer Jake Hoyt, who is on his first Training Day with Alonzo. Jake is a by the book Police Officer and immediately is weary about Alonzo and his way of getting things done. Trying to prove himself Jake breaks some laws which later have their own hinderence and is involved in things way above what he expected.

From a script written by David Ayer and directed by Antoine Fuqua, this is a gritty urban Thriller. The story and characters are all well acted and beliveable, Snoop Dogg even turns in a good – cameo – performance as a wheelchair bound crack dealer. Alonzo is very charismatic but very dangerous, and his unit all follow his lead. Which Jake realises all too late.

The movie is fantastic! I would recommend it too anyone. Great performances, awesome soundtrack and a story that has you hooked from the moment you hit play!

If you haven’t seen it. Do so now!!
