Bananahead – A masterpiece of suspense and psychology

Bananahead” is a gripping psychological horror short that showcases Sally Maersk’s incredible talent in a truly captivating performance. Directed by Christopher Greenslate, the film delves deep into the psyche of Andi Sanger, a young woman attempting to carve out a place for herself in the world of movies, only to uncover a haunting legacy tied to her family’s dark past. Andi’s mother was a bestselling author who wrote the novel, “Bananahead”, she mysteriously disappeared. Andi hopes that being her daughter can help jump start her career through auditioning for the lead role, though it soon indicates this could be the end of the beginning.

The plot moves at a great pace and not one of the twenty-five minutes is wasted or irrelevant. Andi’s discovery of the locked room serves as a chilling turning point. As she steps into the role of Christine, both in the upcoming film and in her own life, the lines between reality and nightmare blur in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Maersk delivers a stunning portrayal of Andi, capturing her desperation, ambition, and the creeping horror that begins to take hold as she confronts the sinister forces at play. The tension builds beautifully, leading to a climax that leaves you breathless and haunted and will stay on replay throughout your head. The draw to go back and rewatch it will take over as there is so much to process and work out. You can’t beat a movie that makes you think, it’s like a small scale Nolan movie.

Christopher Greenslate’s direction is impeccable, using the claustrophobic setting of the old family home to create an atmosphere thick with dread. The film is visually striking, with every scene carefully crafted to heighten the psychological tension. “Bananahead” is not just a horror film; it’s a deeply unsettling exploration of identity, legacy, and the cost of ambition. If Christopher Greenslate can make a feature film with the same atmosphere, I would pay top dollar to see it.

“Bananahead” feels like a homage to Stephen King’s, The Shining. Though ideally seeing the movie at a longer pace would be truly amazing and make for some great cinema.

“Bananahead” is a must-watch, especially for fans of psychological horror. Sally Maersk’s performance alone is a huge selling point, but the film as a whole is a masterpiece of suspense and psychological intrigue. Do not miss this one.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
