Samson – Standing ovation worthy!

Emma and Dale are a recently separated couple sharing a quiet lunch together. Meanwhile, Will Brittain and Emilio Garcia-Sanchez are pitch-perfect as the kidnappers. Once we get their backstory, they become surprisingly likable and relatable.
I love how we first meet the “kidnappees” in one restaurant and the kidnappers in a separate one. The way it’s filmed, along with the interactions, gives off strong Tarantino vibes—especially with the use of flashbacks that gradually tie the stories and characters together, like pieces of a puzzle coming into place.
Initially, I expected this to be an action/thriller/comedy, but it turned out to be more of a dark drama with some “hah, that teaches you” moments—especially in that ending.
Emilio Garcia-Sanchez stole the show for me. He has the muscle car, the silent and brooding presence, and looks like a henchman who could take on the best of them. But when we discover his real passion, it’s a moment that truly takes you aback.
Will Brittain plays a pivotal role, and his character’s arc is a genuinely nice surprise. Trying not to spoil the movie—but it’s hard not to give anything away!
Alice Lee and Ryan Dance star as Emma and Dale. Dale initially comes across as the in-love, “I’d do anything for you” kind of guy, while Emma is reserved, quiet, and hesitant to make a fuss. At first, it seems like that’s just who they are—until the layers get pulled back, and we realize Dale is actually a grade-A abusive douche.
The meaning behind the title Samson comes into play towards the end of the movie, revealing who Samson was and the story behind him. Samson is essentially the tipping point for Emma, and it’s worth every minute leading up to it.
I won’t spoil anything, but the ending? Standing ovation worthy!
This was an absolute treat to watch. Director and co-writer Ruth Du has crafted a fresh, unique film that is definitely worth watching!
